/Family Medicine News Articles/ -- WINCHESTER, VA, August 21, 2009, Katherine Ann Averill, MD of Winchester Womancare, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in obstetrics and gynecology.

Specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, Katherine Ann Averill, MD has over 30 of experience in the healthcare field. In her position with Winchester Womancare, a position she has held for the past 11 years, Dr. Averill is charged with caring for patients, handling high-risk pregnancy cases and performing surgery.

Following in the footsteps of her brother, who was a doctor, and inspired by her mother, who suffered from polio, Dr. Averill began her career in nursing before entering medical school. An active public speaker, she enjoys working with low-income Hispanic patients in an effort to provide education regarding proper prenatal care.

Dr. Averill earned her MD from Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Georgia. She graduated from the George Washington University with a bachelor of science in allied health, and is a board certified nurse practitioner, obstetrician/gynecologist and family nurse practitioner. Dr. Averill is a fellow of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. In recognition of her professional accomplishments, she was named "Professional of the Year" by Cambridge Publishing for the 2008-2009 year.
